How to Build an Eyewear Wardrobe

Why a second (or third) pair can be practical as well as fun.

Most people own several pairs of shoes but only one pair of glasses. Yet glasses sit in the middle of your face every day. A small eyewear wardrobe can be practical as well as expressive.

The everyday pair

Start with a frame you would happily wear to anything: a classic rectangle, a soft square or a tortoise round. Choose a colour that works with most of your wardrobe — black, tortoise and crystal are reliable. Add an anti-reflective coating if you spend time on video calls.

The statement pair

A second pair is the place to experiment: a bold geometric metal frame, a cat-eye in a bright acetate, or a translucent colour. Because it is not your only pair, you can choose something that suits a mood rather than every occasion.

The sun pair

Prescription sunglasses mean you do not have to choose between seeing clearly and being comfortable outdoors. Polarized lenses reduce glare from water and roads.

The task pair

Depending on how you live, consider:

  • Computer glasses set up for screen distance.
  • Sport frames with a secure fit.
  • A backup pair in an old prescription for emergencies.

Keep track of your numbers

Note the measurements of the pair that fits best — lens width, bridge and temple — and use them when shopping. Our measurement guide explains each one.
