Photochromic (light-adaptive) lenses darken when exposed to ultraviolet light and fade back indoors. Because they respond to UV, most photochromic products are designed to block UVA and UVB both when clear and when dark.
What to check
- Look for a stated "100% UVA/UVB" or "UV400" specification.
- Remember that most car windscreens block UV, so photochromic lenses may not darken much while driving.
- Darkening speed and depth vary with temperature — they are often darker in cold weather.
