Ultraviolet light is present outdoors even on cloudy days, and reflective surfaces such as snow, sand and water increase exposure. Health organisations recommend protecting your eyes from UV in the same way as your skin.

Choosing protective eyewear

  • Look for 100% UVA/UVB or UV400 on the label.
  • Darker is not always better — UV blocking is a separate property from tint.
  • Larger lenses and wraparound shapes reduce light from the sides.
  • A wide-brimmed hat adds extra protection.
